Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - J.K. Rowling, Mary GrandPré

Well, here we are.

So, those who kind of know me know that I tried to read the Harry Potter books when I was about fourteen or fifteen, and I just didn't like them. I got halfway through the third book before calling it quits. I love the movies, I love the story, I love the characters--I just don't love Rowling's writing.

I'm trying again to see how it goes, and my friend (who Harry Potter is as Lord of the Rings is for me) lent me the first book to read for our summer break. My goal is to just read them all, finally, but it might be slow going because there are other things I'd like to read as well. And as to how it shapes up compared to what I remember from the books, well...it's not too different.

I think it's a little wordy, and I feel very disconnected from Harry as a character. He's taking the whole wizard thing in stride, without much surprise or disbelief--at least, that's how it feels. The problem with me knowing the movies so well is that I'll constantly be comparing, and I don't really have a way to switch that off. Rowling's writing is still not really doing it for me, but I'm more patient than I was six years ago, so I'm willing to pull through and see how it all comes together. At the very least I'll get to learn more about the world I love so much (and the haters can finally sit down).

We'll see how it goes!
