The Inferno - Dante Alighieri, John Ciardi

I read parts of this when I was a freshman in high school, but only a random canto here and there, for class. I never had a desire to pick up the whole thing until I stumbled on Purgatory at a secondhand store, and eventually came across this.

You know, I'm enjoying it far more than I thought I would. John Ciardi has done a great job as well, with this translation and providing very detailed notes so the casual reader can better understand the text and the time period and everything. I find myself really appreciating the extra tidbits at the beginnings and ends of each canto so I can actually understand what's going on.

Is the story of the Divine Comedy something Dante actually dreamt (or had a vision of) or experienced in any way, and then he wrote it all down? Or is it just an allegory he made up? I'm not sure, and that's something that would be nice to know. Overall, I'm really enjoying it so far!
